Keeping and Developing Talent Leaders vs Managers - Your Career Intel

Keeping and Developing Talent Leaders vs Managers - Your Career IntelThere are several key factors why leaders are able to keep talent and managers often cannot.Throughout my career, Ive noticed several key differentiators between manager and leaders and why the former often cannot keep talent within their organization. During my six years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, at one point I had three different bosses. I learned first-hand of the characteristics of each ones management style and how they led their teams to success. From leading from behind the desk to walking the floors and getting in the trenches with the people in the field, Ive seen what works in terms of retaining and developing top talent. In my current role, I try to incorporate specific skills Ive learned and witnessed to lead my team to achieve and thrive.Above all, leaders are able to inspire others. Rather than having employees who show up just to get the job done, leaders motivate their teams to excel and thriv e because the individuals want to succeed on their own. Theres a sense of pride in their work that stems from the leadership they see at the top. In my time as a recruiter, Ive come in contact with many managers but fewer leaders. The main differentiator is their ability to inspire and motivate their employees to want to perform at the highest level possible.Next, leaders act with love. Meaning, they treat their employees with respect and empathy and are looking out for their best interests. Recently, I worked with a hiring manager who recommended one of his own employees for a position I welches filling. Surprised at his suggestion, he explained that he wanted what was best for the individuals success, even if that meant moving on to a new opportunity. As the saying goes, if you love something, let it go.Likewise, be able to hand over the reins to your team to let them feel challenged and have worth within your company. Employers want to feel cared about and that their opinions mat ter. Thus, managing with a sense of love can lead to greater success and results within your team and organization.Lastly, communication is key. Dont assume your employees can read your mind or know what you need from them. Be specific in your goals and objectives and inspect what you expect from them. Follow up on tasks and provide a sense of accountability in order to make sure they are performing at their highest profil and working toward achieving the desired end result.Just because someone is a manager, doesnt make him or her a good leader. However, if you consider these key traits and characteristics in your management style, youll see your own management style develop as well as the personal and professional success of your team.Have you worked with a manager or leader in the past? Check out the jobs categorized in these sections, but dont stop there. Not all remote job listings will be designated as such.Remote location setting on Glassdoor. For one, many applicant tracking systems automate the process of posting job descriptions to various job boards. When using one of these systems, a human resources rep might not think to change the default location setting before the job description gets published across the web. Therefore, a remote job listing might be inadvertently posted in the city in which the company is headquartered. Search for remote keywords in New York, Chica go, and Los Angeles, or startup hubs like Silicon Valley, Seattle, Portland, Austin et al.In some cases this could also be an intentional move. A company might be comfortable with a telecommuting employee while still preferring (but not necessarily requiring) someone close by. They might envision periodic meetups or simply prefer the logistics of working in the same time zone.In either scenario, be sure to periodically search for remote jobs in cities that are not your own.One unexpected place to find a remote job might be in Oregon. A surprising number of companies seem to accidentally list their telecommute jobs in the rural community aptly named Remote, Oregon, especially on top job site Indeed. If youve exhausted your other resources its worth plugging Remote, OR into the location bar and seeing what comes up.Use Specialized Remote Job Boards and AggregatorsYou should find plenty of remote opportunities on the top job boards and aggregators like Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, ZipR ecruiter, and Google for Jobs, but there are also several job boards specific to work from home jobs. Job Search Advice to Accept or Decline Your Offer Find Your Dream Job

Job Search Advice to Accept or Decline Your Offer Find Your Dream JobJob Search Advice to Accept or Decline Your Offer - Find Your Dream JobAfter writing your resume, holding informational interviews, applying for jobs, writing cover letters, and preparing for interviews, you received a job offer. Congratulations Unfortunately, your job search is bedrngnis over quite yet. Today, we will review the steps you should take when deciding whether or not to accept a job offer, and how to tell the employer. Take Some Time to Think It Over There is no need to make a decision right away. It is perfectly acceptable to ask for some time to consider the job offer and weigh the pros and cons. Below are a number of questions to ask yourself when deciding whether or not to take a job Can you binnenlandsee yourself happily working at this organization? Think carefully about the company culture. Is this an office environment in which you want to work? If you need flexibility with your hours, doe s this company offer that? Along with flexibility, think carefully about travel time. If this job requires a lot of travel or a long commute, make sure you are willing to put in that travel time. How do you feel about your employers management style? If you noticed any red flags about your employer during your interview, be cautious about accepting the job offer. Think carefully about the type of people you like to work for, and whether you can see yourself happily working for this person long term. Is there an opportunity for advancement? If you have long-term career goals, see if these can be fulfilled at this company. Get a sense of how many people are promoted from within. Check to see if the company has a history of retaining its employees long term. If employees are constantly leaving or being fired, and you are looking for a long-term position, you might not want to take the job. Will you be happy with the compensation package? Make sure you are getting paid what youre worth, a nd that you can pay your bills and other expenses on that salary. Look at the rest of the compensation package, including health benefits, life insurance, vacation, sick time, and various perks. If you are not happy with the package, see if the employer is willing to negotiate. Is there a better offer? You might also find yourself considering multiple job offers. Look through this list of questions and think about the pros and cons of each job to help make your decision. If any of these questions remain unanswered, now is the time to ask the employer. If you have questions about the company culture, ask if you can visit the office again, or speak with one of their employees to get a feel for what a typical workday is like. Accepting a Job If you decide to accept a job offer, you want to respond right away. An initial phone call, followed by a written acceptance letter, is the most professional method of accepting a position. Be clear on all the details about the job before accep ting the job. If you negotiate any changes to the offer, make sure both you and the employer agree to those changes before accepting the job. Once you accept the job, tell anyone else whom you met at the office during your interview. How to Decline a Job Offer If you ultimately decide that the job is not a good fit, or you got a better offer (or the offer was simply not good enough), you will have to officially decline the offer. Let the employer know right away. Calling on the phone (and then following up with a letter) is best, but you can also send a letter declining a job offer. When declining an offer, the main goal is to maintain a positive relationship with the organization. You never know when you might work with that company again. Reiterate your appreciation for the time the employer took to interview you. When explaining why you will not accept the offer, be honest but brief. If you dislike the boss or the office environment, simply say, I do not believe I am a good f it for the position. If you accept another job, simply say, I accepted another offer that fits my professional and personal goals best. If you tried to negotiate but did not receive what you wanted, you can be honest as well. Simply say, Due to the fact that the offer is non-negotiable, I will have to decline. Avoid negativity, and do not go into detail. Conclude your letter by thanking the employer, and wish the company continued success. Once you decline the offer, email anyone else with whom you connected at the organization to let them know. Thank them for their assistance as well.

Your brain on skim reading

Your brain on skim readingYour brain on skim readingDeep reading is dying.Today, digital content overload is turning us into a world of skim-readers with consequences for this generation and the next one.Modern-day reading is still evolving. The brains ability to read is rapidly changing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraSkimming allows you to look for details in addition to the main ideas.Michael S. Rosenwaldreportsin theWashington Postthat, according to cognitive neuroscientists, humans seem to be developing digital brains with new circuits for skimming through content at the expense of deep reading. Many people are developing a skill to skim-read.They read the first few lines of an article, then quickly spot certain words or phrases they find valuable rather than take in the whole text. They hone in on what is important to their purpose.American psychiatrist Edward Hallowell, expl ains, never in human history, our brains had to work so much information as today. We have now a generation of people who spend many hours in front of a computer monitor or a cell phone and who are so busy in processing the information received from all directions, so they lose the ability to think and feel. Most of this information is superficial. People are sacrificing the depth and feeling and cut off from other people.Deep reading takes time. Reading slowly to comprehend information is notlage cognitively easy for many people.Attention is exhausting. When attention is limited, skimming rules. When you embrace skimming, the brain builds a system to lower the cognitive load to maximise brain energy.Every minute on an article is a minute not spent doing something else, hence the need to find real value in a piece before spending more time reading it.How do you know if this article is actually good and worth your time? You dont, so you skim.Skimming becomes the only option when you are bombarded with headlines from hundreds, if not thousands, of news sources. Its probably the best way to sift through the insane amount of content produced daily. Its a fundamental reading skill for a lot of people who need to find valuable information in the shortest possible time.I skim daily to find relevant ideas that inform my work.Of course, if I skim an article and find it interesting, switching over to slow comprehensive reading is the next step to find even more valuable information. The reading brain in a digitalworldReading actually changes the wiring of the brain.Read (deeply or skimming) changes our brains ability to comprehend, analyse, and evaluate information. The quality of your reading has a huge impact on how you think.Research showsthat reading helps with fluid intelligence, comprehension and emotional intelligence.Reading involves several brain functions, including visual and auditory processes, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and more.According to the o ngoing research atHaskins Laboratories for the Science of the Spoken and Written Word, reading, unlike watching or listening to media, gives the brain more time to stop, think, process, and imagine the narrative.Deep reading (attentive reading, absorbing, understanding and analysing text) expands a readers attention span.Astudypublished in theAnnual Review of Psychologyfound overlap in brain regions used to comprehend stories and interact with others.Today, technology is changing our brains. We are getting better at parsing information in digital contexts and losing the benefits of deep reading. We are also losing deep attention and focus.Skimming has led to a tendency to go to the sources that seem the simplest, most reduced, most familiar, and least cognitively challenging, says Maryanne Wolf, author of Reader Come Home The Reading Brain In A Digital World. With so much online information, our brains form shortcuts to deal with it all- scanning, searching for valuable phrases, scro lling up and down quickly. Were spending so much time scrolling, bookmarking, pushing, linking, and jumping through text that when we sit down with a great book, our skimming habits interfere with our reading process. For many people who are accustomed to skim-reading digital content, they are likely to avoid reading anything that appears difficult or hard to understand. In her book,Reader Come Home The Reading Brain In A Digital World, Maryanne seeks to understand whats happening to our brains at a time when information overload is increasingly becoming a problem for many people. She writesDo you, my reader, read with less attention and perhaps even less memory for what you have read? Do you notice when reading on a screen that you are increasingly reading for key words and skimming over the rest? Has this habit or style of screen reading bled over to your reading of hard copy? Do you find yourself reading the saatkorn passage over and over to understand its meaning?Maryannes concerns are real and practical in the 21st century.Skimming is so common that, many people cant make time to slowly read a great book. They are in effect wiring their brains for better skimming at the expense of deep reading. As you improve your skimming habit, your brain gradually avoids denser, more complex analyses, even those that are readily available. At some point, you will no longer have the cerebral patience to plow through a long and demanding article or book unless you are really interested in the topic. With time, you wont find the same enveloping pleasure you once derived from your former reading self.critical analysis, empathy and other deep reading processes could become the unintended collateral damage of our digital culture, saysMaryanne. It pays to pause and reflect on the impact of your skimming habit on your deep reading skill.Your ability to process information deeply and critically shouldnt suffer.Closing thoughtsThe brain is constantly adapting. You can benefit from both s kimming and deep reading if you embrace the two habits. There are advantages to both ways of reading. There is potential for a bi-literate brain. How you read is a choice. Its as simple as picking up an actual, physical book or skimming an article.By all means, read, but choose to exercise your empathy, strengthen your critical thinking, attention span, and heighten your appreciation for a great book.Cultivate a new kind of brain to benefit from both deep reading and skimming.
