Never Giving Up - The Power of a Mothers Will to Change a Life As a mother of an 18-year-old daughter in college and a 15-year old son, I’ve experienced during the course of my parenting life the sheer terror and pain of watching my beloved children suffer yet remaining helpless to assist them.     Almost every mother I know has experienced the trauma of this, and many thousands of men and women who aren’t parents but have had children and young adults in their charge know what this feels like â€" to reach the point of complete desperation and despair because you’re powerless to ease the suffering of the one you love so dearly. My friend Lynne Marino â€" a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch shared just such an experience about her youngest son, Robert.   But her story has a silver lining one of courage, persistence and unflagging commitment to trust what she knew to be true, and find new ways to help her son, despite what the medical community wrote off as incurable.   I’d like to share Lynne’s story, as inspiration for all of us who know better than the “experts” on what our bodies need, and who will not give up the fight to find new ways to help the ones we love. Lynne’s story: “In August 2010, our youngest son, Robert, suffered his second third sports-related concussion. This one really rattled him. His high school football coach called us on a damp and rainy Saturday to instruct us to meet the ambulance at the hospital.At first, we kept him home from school, but boredom got the better of him and we had a hard time keeping him from attending school.Being denied sports until hockey season, Robert seemed to be doing okay.   He was released from the doctors care briefly when hockey season started. Two months into the season Robert was truly suffering.   He couldnt focus on his schoolwork and had limited ability to prioritize his time.   We returned to the neurologist who specialized in sports related Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). He diagnosed Robert as having acquired ADHD, as a result of his concussion.As instructed, we began a series of ADHD medications. Robert hated how he felt.Its such torture to see your child suffer and feel powerless to help. I kep t talking with other parents and was soon referred to Dr.  Tepley, a Neuropsychologist. He performed a battery of tests on Robert and ultimately diagnosed him as having a brain shear, which severed a portion of connections in his brain. Armed with this diagnosis, we implemented a plan for Robert at the high school, allowing him extra time to complete tests and assignments.   Throughout this period, Robert continued to try different medications, but nothing helped. After Robert had completed his 1st semester of his senior year, I still wasnt satisfied that wed done everything we could do for him.   Id heard about a therapy called Neurofeedback.   We attended an information session with 50 adults most of whom suffered from TBIs due to accidents or war related injuries or ADD/ADHD. Robert was willing to try anything to get off the meds, that were wreaking havoc on his body and his mind. In a nutshell, it was a miracle. In 90 days Robert was cured.   Neurofeedback (also called Neurotherapy or EEG Biofeedback) takes a measurement of your brain creating a baseline brain map. Once this is done, the therapist can identify the area of the brain that needs attention. The patient is connected with leads from the part of the brain needing attention to a box that runs a video game (yes, a video game).   The object of the game is to have your brain make a car on a racetrack go as fast as possible.   This exercises the part of the brain and repairs the damaged section.   Robert did the video game for 30 minutes each day.   Once a week, wed see the therapist whod download Roberts homework and modify the game to make his brain work harder. After 90 days, he performed another brain map. The section of the brain that had been angry looking and red, was now a calm blue-green.   He declared Robert cured   just prior to his high school graduation. Robert went off to college this past fall.   He still had extra time on file with the college, but he has yet to need it.   His last semester he did well in school and he is completely drug free and back to his old self. This experience enriched our lives because it taught us to: Keep asking for what we need Be relentless MDs and our health systems arent focused on alternative therapies, and often don’t listen to what we know to be true about ourselves Be your own best advocate doctors and teachers are not the ones who know you best. Seek support from your friends and loved ones.  Don’t face this alone.” *   *   *   *   *   * Lynne’s story reminds us that in parenting, as in life, we must remain vigilant and relentless in our pursuit to do what’s necessary to live our lives as we long to fully, joyfully and healthfully and to find the right kind of empowering support that will help us be all we wish to this world. Should I Include Jobs Not Related to My Current Position?When writing a resume, it is often common to see jobs not related to the position you have applied for. It is important to remember this if you are looking to get a job in a certain field. They say that getting your foot in the door is the best way to get that job.Consider this, a resume is a document created by you in order to showcase your qualifications and experience to the employer or hiring manager. The first impression of you will usually be made through the resume, and unfortunately you may not even realize it. It is even more frustrating when you have done well in the resume. Then you realize that the resume does not show a lot of relevant jobs that might be related to the job you applied for.Perhaps you will remember a recent job that you applied for but did not receive an interview invitation. It was a wonderful position, however you were not sure if it was because of your poor resume or if they just didn't like you. If you are good at something that is not on the resume, consider including it.When an interviewer sees an applicant that has done well in the interview, they will most likely want to see more. When doing research online, you will find that almost all positions involve interviews with potential hires. This means that you can write a resume, use an interview to enhance it, and have it go to the front of the line. Just make sure that you include the interview, as well as the other jobs that are not related to the position you are applying for.In addition to the job you apply for, if there is a need for another employee, consider including it. For example, you may be a dog trainer or a travel agent. However, you would not think of yourself as a good taxi driver. The same thing could be said for being a salesperson, or lawyer.It is a mistake to assume that since your experience at a previous job is not included, it won't be included at this new job. You should always keep in mind that y our previous job can be very helpful to your future job. If you love reading, or want to pursue writing, make sure that your previous job can be included in the resume. It would not be very hard to ask your former employer if they would be willing to allow you to include their jobs on your resume. It is even better if the previous employer lets you use his/her letterhead to put the job titles on your resume.Of course, remember that if you would like your resume to be considered by hiring managers and employers, it must include jobs related to the position you are applying for. You will be putting yourself in an excellent position if you include a number of jobs that relate to the position you are applying for. This will also demonstrate to hiring managers that you are well qualified and motivated.

Including relevant skills on a resume is really important for two reasons. It  quickly shows the hiring manager that you have the skills required for the position. Keeping and Developing Talent Leaders vs Managers - Your Career IntelThere are several key factors why leaders are able to keep talent and managers often cannot.Throughout my career, Ive noticed several key differentiators between manager and leaders and why the former often cannot keep talent within their organization. During my six years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, at one point I had three different bosses. I learned first-hand of the characteristics of each ones management style and how they led their teams to success. From leading from behind the desk to walking the floors and getting in the trenches with the people in the field, Ive seen what works in terms of retaining and developing top talent. In my current role, I try to incorporate specific skills Ive learned and witnessed to lead my team to achieve and thrive.Above all, leaders are able to inspire others. Rather than having employees who show up just to get the job done, leaders motivate their teams to excel and thriv e because the individuals want to succeed on their own. Theres a sense of pride in their work that stems from the leadership they see at the top. In my time as a recruiter, Ive come in contact with many managers but fewer leaders. The main differentiator is their ability to inspire and motivate their employees to want to perform at the highest level possible.Next, leaders act with love. Meaning, they treat their employees with respect and empathy and are looking out for their best interests. Recently, I worked with a hiring manager who recommended one of his own employees for a position I welches filling. Surprised at his suggestion, he explained that he wanted what was best for the individuals success, even if that meant moving on to a new opportunity. As the saying goes, if you love something, let it go.Likewise, be able to hand over the reins to your team to let them feel challenged and have worth within your company. Employers want to feel cared about and that their opinions mat ter. Thus, managing with a sense of love can lead to greater success and results within your team and organization.Lastly, communication is key. Dont assume your employees can read your mind or know what you need from them. Be specific in your goals and objectives and inspect what you expect from them. Follow up on tasks and provide a sense of accountability in order to make sure they are performing at their highest profil and working toward achieving the desired end result.Just because someone is a manager, doesnt make him or her a good leader.
